Funny Comparisons

So, in the middle of the night last night, I felt a tap on my shoulder.  It is always all I can do to not gasp when my kids do that to me.  Anyway, Marissa is standing there in the dark crying.  “I had a bad dream,” she said.  My first reaction was, “I’m sorry, what was it about?”  The kids can never answer this in the middle of the night.  I hugged her and tried to talk to her, but as the words came out of my mouth, I realized that I was still asleep and I wasn’t making sense.  “So you woke up in the night and you were hungry?” I mumbled.  She just stared at me…which she had every right to do.  “Um, mommy is too tired to talk about it right now,” I said.  I gave her a hug, she asked if she could sleep with me…and I said no.  She asks this almost every night.  She padded off and went back to bed.

This morning, she informed me that she had a bad dream last night.  “I know, I’m sorry that I was so asleep when you tried to talk to me,” I apologized.  “I dreamed that I was late to school,” she stated very seriously.  I had to stifle a laugh.  This was her nightmare?  “Well, we aren’t ever late to school…don’t worry…it was just a dream.”  Jonathan had come out to hear what her dream was about as he sat down to breakfast.  Just as he was finishing his breakfast, he looked at me and said that he’d had a bad dream last night too.  “I dreamed that I accidentally shot Rissa.”

This, apparently, is the difference between a girl nightmare and a boy nightmare.  Interesting.

A random Sunday post

After being couped up in the house watching conference, we went to the lake as a family just to take a walk. We arrived about an hour before sunset and just enjoyed the views. One of Sam’s favorite things to do is to throw rocks in the lake while making wishes. During our many wish throwing adventures, I’ve discovered that I’m quite the awesome stone skipper! I’m not taking 2 0r 3 skips, but more like 6 and 7. And you know what the best part of it is? Jordan stinks at it. For once it seems, I completely kick his butt at something. I realize it’s just throwing rocks in water, but still, I can have my moment right?
Anyway, a funny thing happened while we were there. I noticed Sam was doing a little dance as he was making his wishes, so I asked him if he had to go to the bathroom. Before he could even answer, he started pulling his pants down, assuring Jordan and I that it would be perfectly OK if he just peed right there on the rocks. I couldn’t even react becasue I was so consumed with the thought: “Who is this child? Where has my ultra cautious, timid & easily embarassesed son gone?” I couldn’t help but stand there with pride (gross I know) . However Sam must have begun pondering that very same thing because suddenly he pulls up his pants, picks up a rock and for a final wish before the public deed says “I wish that no one will see me pee” and takes off for a more private setting in the trees. Now that’s the boy I know 🙂
And because posts are better with pictures, here is another picture from my CA trip of all the cousins together. I plan to stretch out documenting my trip for an entire year 🙂

Raccoon Boy

My mom recently found this jacket and hat at Gymboree and she had to get it.  I had a little photo shoot at home with Brendan.  My job is to make him smile and Adam snaps photos as fast as he can go.  Look at how happy he is.  He’s a stud…not to mention a-dor-able!  I guess I’m biased.

Did you hear?

I never thought this day would come, and I still can’t believe it, but Philadelphia is getting a temple! It was announced this morning by President Monson in the 1st session of Conference. The ward members are definately buzzing with the news and the giddiness is contagious! I’m assuming that it has somewhat to do with the sudden growth of the church especially in inner city Philly and to a smaller degree out here in the suburbs. What a treat it will be to have one so close (it will be in Valley Forge from what I understand). We Pennsylvanians aren’t the only ones welcoming a new temple however. It was also announced that temples would be constructed in the Kansas City area; Calgary, Alberta; Cordoba, Argentina and Rome, Italy. This will bring the total to 145 temples worldwide.

Fishy

Something fishy is going on around here…

The kids and I went out to dinner last night at one of Sam’s favorite places; Applebees. I was a little nervous going without Jordan, but acutally they were better than usual. It was probably because they didn’t have to fight for my attention. Anyway, I was in the mood for fish (no suprises there) so I ordered their Parmesan Tilapia. It was OK. I’m thankful that Benjamin and Samuel are both very good eaters and for the most part will try anything.

However, you have to be careful with Benjamin because he will eat and eat till he’s sick. So I wasn’t suprised that after nearly finishing his kids sized meal, he went after mine. He took most of my broccoli and showed interest in the fish. I am a little possessive about my food, so I only gave him 2 small bites. Well, it’s a good thing I didn’t give him more becasue apparently our little guy is allergic to fish, or at the very least just had an isolated food reaction to it last night.

About 3 hours after putting him to bed, he woke up with abdominal pain that upset him for a couple hours. In the morning, one of his eyes had swollen slightly; but no visible rash. I was certain it had been caused by the fish. I really hope it doesn’t end up being a food allergy; what a bummer that would be. Can you imagine having to tell Benjamin that there’s something he can’t put into his mouth?

The Pickle

So, in the grand tradition of Jonathan…Brendan gnawed on his first pickle today.  At first it gave him a full body shiver, but he became very excited when I placed it in his hand and he shoved it right into his mouth.  He sucked on it for about ten minutes at lunch today.  Who needs a toy when you can gnaw on a dill pickle?

Drum roll please….

We’ve been planning to spend Christmas with my family this year for quite some time, so it will come as no suprise that we just bought our plane tickets last night. What might come as a suprise (and I hope a good one) is that we’re also going to travel to Utah to see Jordan’s family for the New Year! I hope you guys don’t mind 🙂 We’ll be in town around the 29th of Dec after driving up from San Deigo and staying in Vegas. We’ll be leaving on Jan 4th so we’ll have at least 6 full days to visit. Jordan wanted me to postpone the announcement until we had the details worked out, but hey, he knows me well enough not to expect full compliance 🙂
